Where Happiness Is Learned

TorahStudies-week1.jpg

A new course exploring Judaism's relevance in modern life by the acclaimed Jewish Learning Institute will be taught in Tucson.

Chabad Tucson Women's Circle will launch the "Torah Studies - A Weekly Journey into the Soul of the Torah" series in October 2012.

Classes will be held at the Congregation Young Israel, 2443 E 4th Street, beginning October 14, 8:00 – 9:00 pm, and continue for eleven consecutive Sunday evenings.

Like all classes by Chabad of Tucson, this latest adult education offering for women is designed for all levels of Jewish knowledge.

"I am looking forward to the great discussions that these texts no doubt will generate," said Goldie Shemtov who will be presenting the course.

"Some of the topics to be addressed are the Jewish perspective on realizing your true potential, human struggle, and the power of a single action," she said.

Over 150,000 people in more than 300 cities worldwide have attended classes and programs offered by The Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) since its founding in 1998.

"We are especially proud to bring this exciting course to Tucson.  You will walk away surprised, inspired and knowing more about who we are as Jews," said Mrs. Feigie Ceitlin, a coordinator of the Women's Circle.

Season One of Torah Studies in Tucson is dedicated in loving memory of Mrs. Jean Rosenfield (Genenda bas Avigdor & Chaya Leah), of blessed memory.

The fee for the entire course is $55, which includes the course textbook. The fee for a single $8.

Rabbi Gives City Hall Invocation

Invocation-CityHall.jpg

Rabbi Yossie Shemtov delivered a rousing invocation at the Tucson Mayor and Council Meeting, the first since the beginning of the new Jewish Year of 5773.

"Look favorably upon the Mayor, members of the City Council, the City Manager and all those that dedicate their time to this great city of Tucson," Shemtov has asked "G-d in heaven, Master of the Universe."

He was warmly welcomed by the Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and members of the City Council at City Hall on Wednesday, September 19, 2012.

"We are a country founded upon the principles of morality, decency and trust in G-d," said the as Regional Director of Chabad of Tucson and spiritual leader of Congregation Young Israel of Tucson.

He reminded the people gathered --including members of the public-- to "remember that in laboring for the enactment of just laws - they are doing (G-d's) will."

He concluded with the biblical blessing of "He who makes peace on high, may He bring peace upon us and upon all of humanity, let us say Amen."

Publication Advises Jews, Non Jews

The calendars are in and they are quickly running out.

By popular demand, Chabad of Tucson has once again printed 10,000 copies of the Jewish Art Calendar, also known as the Tucson Jewish Calendar.

The beautifully designed multi-color publication features an easy-to-use dual date system, with both Jewish and secular dates.

It includes Shabbat and Holiday candle lighting times, alongside educational messages, traditional Jewish recipes, and popular thematic artwork.

"The calendar is a great way to connect to the Tucson Jewish community," says Bobby Present, Senior Vice President Schaefer Present Investment Group and past President of the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona.

Approximately 20,000 people see or use the calendar over the year.

Chabad sends 8,000 copies directly to households and businesses around Southern Arizona. Additional copies are placed in synagogues and other locations of interest.

Bill Addison, President of Evergreen Mortuary Cemetery in Tucson, has been a long-time advertiser in the calendar.

"We found that the Jewish community has thanked us for advertising (in the calendar) because they feel it helps make the calendar available to all," he says.

"It is also a resource for the non Jewish community because it helps understand when the Jewish holidays are," Addison added.

With the printing costs rising, Chabad asks that if you are one of the many that enjoy the calendar, please take a moment to make a donation (whatever size) by using the return envelope or by clicking here
