Tucson's Tallest Menorah was commissioned in 1983 by Rabbi Yossie Shemtov, Executive Director of Chabad Tucson, a Jewish education and outreach organization. The menorah was inspired by the global Jewish holiday awareness campaign of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.

The gold-colored, nine-branched steel candelabra stands 13 feet tall and weighs approximately 500 pounds. Its architect and engineer, David Tehrani, is a graduate of the University of Arizona and has since served as a City Planner for Los Angeles, California. It was built by Kasper-Hall Steel in Tucson.

Each year, the menorah is installed at El Presidio Park Plaza, located at 160 W. Alameda Street. The site is adjacent to Tucson City Hall, the Pima County Administrator's Office East, the Pima County Historic Courthouse, and the January 8th Memorial.

Prominent attendees at the menorah lighting ceremony in past years have included Tucson mayors George Miller, Jonathan Rothschild, and Regina Romero.

The Tucson Menorah was prominently featured in the photography book Let There Be Light (Kehot Publication Society, November 1998), which showcased international commemorations of the Chanukah holiday, highlighting the menorah's significance in global Jewish celebrations.
